Whitney Houston Biopic

By SheelaR

Sooooo… The Whitney Houston biopic aired on the Lifetime Movie Network tonight, and It was awful. The acting, the direction (Angela Bassett, Director), and almost everything about it. Well, the actress (Yaya DaCosta) who portrayed the late Whitney Houston.. looked a bit like her..if you squinted really hard. Arlen Escarpeta, Bobby Browns character…was a total miss. I could not find Bobby Brown in him anywhere. However, the actor who portrayed Clive Davis (Mark Rolyston) was a good match for his likeness. The one bright spot, was the soundtrack of Whitney’s music, song by Deborah Cox. She did an amazing job, considering she was covering the music of a legend.

I’m disappointed because I fully believe that Whitney’s legacy deserved a much better effort. As much as I love Angela Bassett…I can’t in good conscience give her a pass on this. It very well may have been her best effort, but I don’t think she pulled it off..at least not to my expectations. Maybe I expected too much. Others seem to like it. I could only muster up a 5 out of 10.

I sort of feel bad that I don’t feel more positive about it. I didn’t even watch it until the end, because the first hour of it was tragically horrid. It simply wasn’t a movie worthy of such greatness. After the Aaliyah debacle…I wanted this to knock it out of the park for me.

If you haven’t seen it, check it out..you might actually enjoy it. I’m a tough critic. No much slides past me, but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it.
