From the earliest days of slavery and the forced labor of African people on plantations, to the fight for emancipation and civil rights, the historical experiences of Black Americans have shaped the nation in significant ways. Here are a few aspects of America’s legacy in relation to Foundational Black Americans:

Slavery and its Aftermath: Foundational Black Americans endured the brutality and dehumanization of slavery, which was the foundation of America’s economic growth in the 17th to 19th centuries. The legacy of this dark chapter includes the resilience and cultural resilience of Black communities, as well as ongoing disparities rooted in systemic racism.

Civil Rights Movement: The Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century emerged as a response to racial segregation, discrimination, and disenfranchisement. The efforts of Foundational Black Americans and their allies led to significant legislative victories, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. These milestones helped pave the way for greater racial equality and justice.

Back to School in America: Keeping our Children Safe

By SheelaR

As students head back to school, the topic of school safety becomes increasingly important. In recent years, there have been several high-profile incidents of violence in schools, sparking nationwide discussions about how to ensure the safety of students and staff.

One of the most debated topics is gun control. Many people argue that stricter gun control measures, such as background checks and limiting access to firearms, would help prevent school shootings. They believe that by reducing the number of guns in circulation, the likelihood of a potential shooter obtaining a firearm and using it in a school would decrease.

Opponents of stricter gun control argue that it infringes on their Second Amendment rights and that it’s not the solution to the problem. They believe that focusing on mental health issues and improving their support systems would be a more effective approach.

Another aspect of school safety is implementing preventive measures. Schools across the country have been taking steps to improve security, such as installing metal detectors, hiring armed school resource officers, and conducting active shooter drills. While these measures aim to make students and staff feel safer, some argue that they also create an atmosphere of fear and worry.

Additionally, the role of technology in school safety is growing. Schools are increasingly using surveillance cameras, visitor management systems, and anonymous reporting apps to monitor and address potential threats. These advancements, when used effectively and ethically, can be valuable tools in ensuring school safety.

It is essential for schools to create a comprehensive safety plan that addresses various aspects of security, including but not limited to gun control, preventive measures, and technology. School administrators, teachers, parents, and students all have a role to play in prioritizing and implementing these safety measures.

In conclusion, ensuring school safety in America is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. It involves addressing gun control, improving mental health support systems, implementing preventive measures, and utilizing technology responsibly. Only by working together can we create safe learning environments for all students.

FOX News: An American Albatross

By SheelaR

FOX News has long been a significant player in American media, with a large and dedicated audience. However, there is growing evidence to suggest that FOX News has devolved into a problematic and divisive outlet, often prioritizing partisan agendas over responsible journalism. Consequently, this article argues that FOX News has become an American albatross, contributing to the polarization of society and undermining the integrity of news dissemination.

1. Bias and Manipulation of Information

FOX News has faced countless allegations of biased reporting. Many argue that the outlet favors sensationalism, cherry-picking stories, and framing them through a conservative lens. This approach leads to a distortion of facts, misleading viewers, and creating a highly partisan atmosphere. Objective and unbiased reporting is crucial for a functioning democracy, and FOX News’ approach erodes trust in journalism.

2. Promoting Falsehoods and Conspiracy Theories

FOX News has been at the forefront of propagating false information and conspiracy theories, sometimes disseminating them without proper fact-checking or accountability. Instances such as the “birther” movement, promoting climate change denial, and the coverage of the 2020 election controversy demonstrate how FOX News contributes to the spread of misinformation and sows doubt in established facts.

3. Amplifying Divisiveness and Encouraging Polarization

The network’s programming tends to align with one political ideology, catering primarily to conservative viewers. By explicitly targeting this demographic, FOX News perpetuates an “us versus them” mentality that fosters division rather than fostering a sense of unity. The network’s commentators often engage in inflammatory rhetoric and personal attacks, further polarizing an already divided nation.

4. Influence on Political Discourse and Policy

FOX News exerts significant influence over political discourse and policy-making in the United States. Due to its enormous viewership, powerful politicians from both major parties court the network, sometimes shaping their policies or stances to appeal to its conservative base. This undue influence can hinder substantive discussion and compromise, as politicians prioritize pandering to FOX News instead of addressing the actual needs and concerns of the American people.

5. Erosion of Journalistic Integrity

Traditionally, journalism holds a vital role in holding power accountable and providing accurate and reliable information for citizens. However, FOX News’ willingness to prioritize partisan agendas and its tendency to blur the line between opinion and news reporting undermines the profession’s integrity. By sowing mistrust in the media, FOX News weakens democracy’s foundation and jeopardizes the public’s ability to make informed decisions.

Conclusion

While FOX News once held a respected place in American media, it has, in recent years, become an albatross around the nation’s neck. By prioritizing partisan agendas, disseminating misinformation, and amplifying divisiveness, the network contributes to the decline of journalistic integrity and democratic discourse. It is essential for viewers and society at large to recognize the detrimental impact of FOX News and demand responsible, unbiased reporting that fosters informed civic participation.

Art Education in the United States

By SheelaR

Art education plays a crucial role in the United States, as it nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation. Despite its significance, art education often faces challenges and is undervalued in the education system.

Firstly, art education fosters and develops creativity in students. By engaging in various art forms, such as painting, sculpting, and performing, students are encouraged to think outside the box. They learn to express themselves imaginatively, enhancing their problem-solving skills and ability to think divergently. Research has consistently shown that art education positively influences cognitive development and fosters innovative thinking.

Furthermore, art education helps students develop critical thinking skills. Analyzing and interpreting different forms of art prompts students to think critically and make judgments based on evidence. This skill is transferable to other subjects and activities, enabling students to become more effective learners overall.

Another vital aspect of art education is the appreciation of diverse cultures and perspectives. Art allows individuals to understand and connect with historical events, traditions, and societal issues from different parts of the world. By studying art, students develop empathy and a broader perspective, contributing to a more inclusive society.

However, despite the undeniable benefits, art education often struggles to receive adequate funding. Schools are frequently compelled to prioritize subjects that are measured by standardized tests, which leads to the marginalization of arts programs. Consequently, many students miss out on the enriching experiences and lifelong passions art education can provide.

In conclusion, art education is a fundamental pillar of education in the United States. It nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation, ultimately contributing to well-rounded individuals. Although it faces challenges, its value should not be underestimated. By recognizing and supporting the importance of art education, we can cultivate a society that values creativity, innovation, and cultural understanding.

Letting Go and Learning

Death is a funny thing…

My ex mother-in-law passed tonight. I didn’t think I would feel so affected, but here I am – overcome with grief and sadness. My plans for a peaceful nights sleep has been shattered.

I’m at point where the tears are borderline uncontrollable. However, I’m not crying because I’ll miss her, because she hated me and the feeling was mutual. She hated me for things I had no control of, and I reciprocated in kind. We happily kept the toxicity alive for more than 17 years.

I’m crying because of all the missed opportunities to forgive and all the missed opportunities to free myself from the anger of being rejected. I’m crying because I’m wondering what other things have I missed because I hated her. I’m crying because I allowed myself to be controlled through osmosis.

I could have simply moved on, but I didn’t want her to win whatever imaginary war we were having. I wanted to make sure she knew that the 2306 miles between us wasn’t enough. I’m not trying to teach you anything, but I’ve learned a lot.

Yes, I’m headed to California for her funeral. It’s time to bury the hatchet, literally and figuratively.

COVID Chronicles Pt 2

By Sheela

COVID Chronicles

I’ve already reached a crescendo with this COVID thing. However, it’s still taking a toll on my emotional and physical health. I’m not functioning well. I’m not eating enough, I’m not sleeping enough, and for every 30 seconds of activity, I’m out for hours. The coughing isn’t painful but it wipes out all of my energy.

When I do manage to get some sleep, my dreams are unintelligible. I dreamt about an assortment of plastic tabs and phone hackers. I’m tying to manage my mood, but some days I simply want to be left alone, no matter the good intentions.

Nobody tells you to manage your mental health – you find that part out the hard way. My doctor told me that based on my symptoms and vitals that I’m moving through it nicely. It doesn’t feel like it when it took me ten minutes to move a basket of laundry five feet.

You can get through it, but the cost might be a heavy one.

COVID Chronicles

By SheelaR

Day three with COVID. I thought I did everything right. Got vaccinated, always double masked, and engage in social distancing. Well, I could have done a better job social distancing. I caught COVID from a close friend who I assumed was also doing everything right. However, she wasn’t always masking up, because she assumed the vaccine would be enough. I’m disappointed.

My symptoms have been fairly mild, except for a debilitating headache, it’s the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. During the day the coughing isn’t that bad, but it keeps me up at night. My sense of smell and taste are still intact. I hope it stays that way, because I love to cook and eat.

What no one ever talks about is the loneliness. The isolation is sad. These last few days away from my parents and grandfather has been the absolute worst. Phone calls are sporadic because of the headaches.

Speaking of headache…. Gotta have a lie down. We’ll talk about some more about it tomorrow.

Let’s Talk About It ~ Kevin Samuels

By SheelaR

“Black women are your own counsel. You sit around and talk to each other, assuming you can fix one another, when you’re all broken.” – All black women?

“Have you raised your child to be an asset to another man?” To men they are liabilities.” – Including your own?

“You need to give your woman/wife the gift of being uncomfortable.” – Is that why you’re twice divorced?

“Beauty is universal and the thing is, we’re talking about black women…they are on the opposite end of the spectrum on all ranks.” – So, only women with European features and white non-myelinated skin are beautiful? Who decided this? There are no beautiful black women, at all?

-Kevin Samuels

I added these direct quotes for context.

I was casually scrolling through my Instagram feed when Kevin Samuels appeared. I’d heard the name but decided to relegate him to the same corner as Derrick Jaxn. Unfortunately, that didn’t keep Kevin out my feed. During one of my bouts with insomnia, I decided it was a good time to watch. Not much leaves me speechless, but… I’m still trying to process it.

One must also consider the source of any given advice — is the source adequately educated? Does the source have the necessary cultural lens and experience to provide consultation and have they, themselves, healed internal trauma to project others down the right path? For Mr. Samuels, I’m no therapist, but I would say HELL NO! The hard conversations he presents need to be had, but not entirely at the expense of black women.

Without naming it, because he doesn’t seem know any better, he’s engaging in “Plantation Patriarchy, but he uses his “Christianity” as cover. He is simply more interested in disrespecting vulnerable black women for clout and entertainment, and there are least 1 million black men that agree with him. Sir, you’re playing a dangerous game, it won’t end well. What I will say, he’s not wrong about everything, because even a broke clock is right twice a day.

As I’ve said before, not everything he says should be dismissed. It’s his framing of that advise/information that is problematic. He is trying compel Black women to reframe their definitions and expectations of potential mates. They come to him at their most vulnerable, and he exploits them. He capitalizes off of their desire for stability by comparing them to White, Latina, and Asian women. These women don’t have the same history and experience as black women in America. It’s an unfair and unrealistic comparison.

Once again, these difficult conversations need to be had, but not at the expense of black women only. Black men also have ownership in any issues that affect black families and their community. However, according the this self-processed expert – the health and happiness of the Black community is reliant on the Black woman being for her man “Fit, Feminine, and Cooperative.”

This “tough-love” advice oozes misogynoir, amplifying a historically racist and westernized view of beauty that only serves to demean and hurt Black women. It leaves Black women open for attack, and his hyper-focus on surface discourse surely seals the deal. His Jerry Springer like platform is nothing more than a breeding ground for click-bait conversations that incite real-time attacks on black women.

On many occasions, he fails to properly cite his sources of the Information he relies heavily upon. He knows his audience won’t care or critically think for themselves. More importantly, they won’t challenge the validity of anything he says. He throws it out there and they ride it like urban cowboys. Their need to make black women the enemy, for outweighs their need for helpful or factual information. He relies on their willful ignorance to keep them in alignment. It’s what many of us recognize in Trump fans, Jim Jones Kool-Aid drinkers, and David Koresh followers. Am I the only one that remembers the Heaven’s Gate cult?

He consistently injects the worst stereotypes about black women into every conversation. It’s absolutely egregious and dangerous that this man who has been on the planet for more than half a century would proudly encourage assimilation as a viable solution to the relationship woes between Black women and men. His antiquated ideas about relationships have no place in modern America. We’re evolving, and so must our relationships.

R Kelly – Judgement Day

By SheelaR

In America, black women have historically been the least protected, loved, and respected. So, it should come as no surprise that with all we know, R Kelly is still the benefactor of black protectionism. It’s been at least two decades since we learned of his predilection for young girls. In 2002, we saw a video of Kelly urinating into the mouth of a teenage girl. It is also a fact that he married and impregnated 15-year old Aaliyah Houghton. Instead of holding him responsible, the community shamed blamed and his young victims.

His fame bought him unwavering love and reverence that most celebrities enjoy, however, he’s not like most celebrities. He is a abusive sexual predictor. He’s the sickest kind there is. In 1994, he was accused of multiple sexual offenses with underage women, including child pornography. That case took six years to go to trial. When it finally did, the girl whom the prosecutors had identified declined to cooperate, as did her parents. He was eventually acquitted of that charge, and his career continued uninterrupted.

Those early charges should have ended him. He should have been cancelled decades ago. It’s time to end the unbroken reign these animals enjoy. No more coddling men that rape and defile your young daughters, sisters, and nieces. Where is your line in the sand? Where is your instincts to protect young women and girls? If you support him, you own part of this

I cannot and will not separate the man from his music. Music didn’t sooth that savage beast, but at least the beast that is R Kelly, has been silenced.

Go ahead, Live Your Life – With Care and Concern

By SheelaR

Life during the pandemic may not be how you envisioned 2020, but shifting your mindset can make your new version of 2020 an enjoyable one.

Here are some tips for living your best life through the pandemic:

Accept the inevitability of having to put something’s on ice

Were you supposed to go on that big vacation this year? Was there a promotion for work you were aiming for? It’s time to accept that these things may have to be put on hold for some time, but it does not mean that they will never happen.

It is helpful to only identify any small steps you can take now to eventually reach that goal in the future, and accept that the end result will have to be put on hold. It is also helpful to focus on yourself by not comparing yourself to what others have accomplished through their own experience in the pandemic. Everyone’s situations look different! Just because someone finished that home project while you have only managed to do your laundry each week, it is okay! It is important to recognize that you are doing your best to manage life through this new experience of a pandemic.

Indulge in a bit of shameless self-care

Think back to life pre-pandemic. Can you identify how you were taking care of yourself? It is even more important to make sure you take care of yourself during these times, whether you have children to home-school or you’re on the front lines as an essential worker. Self-care is different for everyone, and there is a wide range of self-care activities you can incorporate into your daily life. Take time to sit and think about what you would like to add into your daily routine as self-care. The amount of time you take will also be different for each individual. You can carve an hour into each day or just start out with 5 minutes of self-care each morning. The limits are endless, so take your time to figure out what works for you!

Focus on connections with others

Whether you’re struggling to manage your “new normal” or feel isolation due to not going into the office every day, make sure you continue to reach out for connection. During the pandemic, many people feel the effects of lack of in-person connection with those outside of their families. It is important to reach out to friends and loved ones to continue making connections and support one another. If you feel you are struggling, you can schedule a free consult here to connect with a therapist to help support your needs via phone, video or outdoors for a “walk and talk session.” It is important to remember, you do not have to struggle through this alone!
